Pennsylvania is home to some of the most memorable open spaces in the nation. Our state’s working family farms, Amish country, the Poconos and historic sites such as Valley Forge and Gettysburg attract thousands of visitors from across the state and nation each year. Unfortunately, these vital pieces of our natural heritage are continuously threatened by builders and developers who try to turn these open spaces into strip malls, mansions and large box stores by any means necessary.

Fortunately, our state representative, Barbara McIlvaine Smith, has introduced House Bill 1787, legislation that will help local officials protect these endangered open spaces. HB 1787 will assist local communities when developers sue their township to erect structures that the township doesn’t want to build. This bill will help make sure that local residents have more control over zoning, and a greater ability to control unwanted development.

As a concerned citizen and local constituent, I would like to thank Rep. McIlvaine Smith for recognizing the importance of open spaces and acting in the best interest of local residents by introducing this legislation. It is reassuring that our elected officials value the ability of local communities to promote sustainable development while protecting our open spaces.
