LEGISLATIVE NOTES

State Rep. Barbara McIlvaine Smith, D-156th, of West Chester, led a charge to help cut energy costs Wednesday by giving each member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives an energy-effecient compact flourescent light bulb (CFL).

She paid for the bulbs with her own money, not taxpayer dollars. She hopes the gesture will encourage all Pennsylvanians to switch to CFLs in their homes and offices.

"These little light bulbs are powerhouses in helping to save energy. They use about 75 percent less energy than incandescent bulbs, last up to 10 times longer

and save $30 or more in energy costs over the life of the bulb," McIlvaine Smith said. "In addition, they burn cooler than regular light bulbs so they're safer to use and can cut down on air conditioning costs in the summer time."

The House is engaged in a special session on energy independence, and a key component of the Democratic majority's plan to cut energy costs is to help individuals and businesses cut consumption.
